There are two nurseries and day-care centers for the wee ones from 2 months to 6 years, and ski schools for kids from 3 to 12. Teens have their own programs. A fabled “Kids Only” ski trail winds around Indian wigwams, log forts, trading posts, and saloons, and through a mine.

Off the slopes, almost every conceivable winter activity is available, including a cross-country ski trip on the 10th Mountain Division trail, which runs from Vail to Aspen. The trail was named for the famed 10th Mountain Division, which trained for Alpine warfare during World War II at Camp Hale, 30 miles from Vail.

Intelligently, Vail, with a base elevation of 7,000 feet, offers skiers in its vacation planning guide advice on how to minimize altitude problems.

Direct flights into Vail/Eagle airport, 30 miles from the slopes, are available from seven major American cities. Vail is 100 miles west of Denver on Interstate 70.
